Overview

Manimahesh Kailash – The Abode of Lord Shiva in Himachal Pradesh

Manimahesh Kailash, one of the five sacred Kailash peaks believed to be the abodes of Lord Shiva, is located in the Bharmour sub-division of Chamba district in Himachal Pradesh, India. Revered by devotees and trekkers alike, this holy mountain holds deep spiritual significance.

The name “Manimahesh” means “Jewel of Lord Shiva.” According to local belief, during sunrise, when the first rays of the sun strike the peak of Manimahesh Kailash, a dazzling reflection resembling a gem becomes visible. This divine spectacle is the reason behind the name “Manimahesh” (Mani meaning gem and Mahesh being another name for Shiva).

Due to its location, it is also referred to as Chamba Kailash.

Every year, on the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan, a grand fair and pilgrimage known as the Manimahesh Yatra is held. Thousands of devotees participate in this sacred journey to seek blessings from Lord Shiva.

The majestic Manimahesh Kailash stands at an altitude of 5,653 meters (18,547 feet) above sea level. Nestled below the peak is the serene Manimahesh Lake, situated at an altitude of 4,080 meters (13,386 feet). This high-altitude lake is known for its crystal-clear, sweet water and is considered highly sacred by pilgrims.

Surrounded by the stunning beauty of the Himalayas, Manimahesh Kailash and Lake offer not only a spiritual retreat but also a breathtaking natural experience.
